Original inquiry
Hey sasa,

I have a friend who is 6 weeks pregnant and currently doesn’t have any
medical insurance. While trying to get some information, we came across the
requirement that maternity cover has to be purchased 12 months in advance.

How true is this, and does she have any options at this stage before we
consider the non-insurance maternity packages offered directly by hospitals?

Kindly advise.

Maternity Insurance in Kenya: Can You Get Cover at 6 Weeks Pregnant?

Greetings, and thank you for your enquiry.

In Kenya, the 12-month maternity waiting period is common, but it is not a
universal rule. The waiting period varies depending on the insurer and
specific medical plan.

Since she is already six weeks pregnant, a new medical policy would
generally not cover the current pregnancy and delivery where the applicable
maternity waiting period has not been completed. Pregnancy-related
complications would also need to be checked against the specific policy
terms.

That said, she may still have options worth exploring, including existing or
employer medical cover, SHA benefits, and hospital maternity packages for
the current pregnancy. A new private medical policy may also provide other
medical benefits, although the current pregnancy would generally remain
subject to the applicable waiting period or exclusion.

If considering a hospital maternity package, it is important to look beyond
the headline price and confirm what is included, particularly normal
delivery, C-section, complications, doctors' fees, medication and newborn/
Neonatal Intensive Care.

We would be happy to understand her circumstances and guide her on the
practical options available before she makes a decision.

Thank you.
